Walnut & Cherry Wave Board

This board began with a story rather than a sketch.

My wife was searching for a meaningful retirement gift for her supervisor, someone who finds joy outdoors, whether paddling a quiet river, exploring a wooded trail, or simply appreciating the calm that nature offers. The piece needed to be personal, reflective, and timeless.

Instead of reaching for measurements and drawings, I let the wood guide the design.

The flowing cherry inlays were cut freehand and intentionally left organic. Depending on how you view the board, they can represent a winding river carving through a landscape, the wake of a kayak gliding across still water, or a path stretching toward the horizon. The darker walnut provides a sense of stability and grounding, while the lighter cherry creates movement and direction.

To me, the design speaks about life's journey. The waves symbolize the experiences that shape us, the bends, detours, challenges, and discoveries that make every path unique. Retirement is not an ending, but the beginning of a new stretch of river, one with the freedom to choose the destination.

Like all Barhayee pieces, this board was crafted without rigid plans. The wood dictated the rhythm, and each cut was made by hand, allowing the natural character of the walnut and cherry to become part of the story.

Whether used as a serving board, display piece, or daily reminder of a meaningful chapter, it is intended to celebrate movement, adventure, and the road or river ahead.
